Working Mistress No More

Last night, Master took me out for one of those long walks. I am actually happy he's going to walk me through the village. He rarely does that, as he is often busy. He leave early before breakfast was even served to us, and he would arrive very late after we've had our dinner. I wonder where he goes and what he does when he leaves the house.

Quite different from the Mistress. She would often tell me where she goes and why she has to leave. No matter how different she smells and her hair tied up, she'd never leave without giving me a high five. No matter if my paws are cold from the whole night's sleep; or when it got too warm from walking and running in the garage; or if it gets too dirty from playing too much. She would often tell me that she'll be going to "school" or "hospital" to work and that she'll be back with goodies for me. She would tell me that she has to go there to buy me goodies. I wonder why it takes her so long to get back. When she does come home from wherever she said she'd come from, she'll have a cold pizza wrapped in tissue or spaghetti with meatballs in a paper box for me. I can smell it in her bag but after a change of clothes, she'll surely give me that to eat.

When Master arrives home, on the other hand, he would often call my name in a funny sing-song voice he used when I was a puppy. I would often bark to have him stop lest the neighborhood dogs tease me of it but Parthas would also bark to egg him on. He would continue calling me until I wag my tail and pull out my tongue. In the end, I would get a pat on the head, a mumbled "Good boy, Utoy!" and a light squeeze on the nose.

That night we headed towards the stop where Mistress would alight from her transport. Master sat on a bench while he waited for a street-side barbecue to cook our orders. He wanted to eat chicken while he assumed I would relish hotdogs. I wonder why I can't have them both?

I think Master had been really impatient because he started counting every type of public transport that Mistress might have ridden to get home to us. We had already eaten our barbecued meat and despite my entreaties (that I am also thirsty!) Master drank a bubbly drink while we continued waiting. Master told me to keep my eyes out for Mistress.

I smelled her even before a vehicle stopped in front of us. When I saw her, I pulled Master who was holding on my leash. I can see he was surprised because Mistress called me first. I wanted to run to her but was almost strangled when Master pulled me back. I was so excited to see her. I wanted to run back home, drink some water from my bowl and wait for my goodies. My humans were talking in hushed voices while they walked in a leisurely pace. I had to be patient and pull them to walk a little faster.

When we got home, I could sense Mistress was very sad when she came back with my food. She was a little teary eyed as I ate spaghetti with meatballs. She started stroking my back softly and I can tell she was very sad when she told me that she won't be going to work starting tomorrow. She told me that I might not celebrate my 1st birthday as she had promised. I can sense Parthas' and Choco's smirks from the shadows but they thankfully kept quiet during Mistress' monologue. I put my chin on Mistress' lap and the more I can sense her sadness. I fell asleep but I can hear her sobs in my dreams.
